Well another excelent trip on the Cartlet Lady under the command of skipper Andy Rickard. A fuller account of the day will appear in the next blog entry along with some more pics from the trip.
"The Beast Rises" is an apt title for this entry I think. We were steaming back on the return leg of the trip with Cliff, Andy, Aaron and myself up on the flying bridge chatting as we moved along but still with an eye to the sea ahead for anything of interest. All of a sudden there was an almighty splash off to the starboard side about 50 mtrs distant. Naturally it grabbed our attention but we didn't see what made it. "Anybody see what caused that" came the cry from Cliff to those on the deck below. Minke shouted one, Thresher shouted another, no one was sure. In the seconds this was happening I swung the camera around and hoped it would breach again. Sure enough it did but much further away this time and my eyes widened as I realised it was a 20-30ft 1-2ton Basking Shark most probably trying to rid itself of parasites. Thankfully everyone on the boat got a good view and I must say it made the return leg which up to that point had been very quiet cetacean wise.
