Strumble Diary 27/08/2021

Getting Up Close and Personal With The Porps

A stunning day today in many respects. The weather was fine and  with a midday high tide there was scope for two sessions. The morning rising tide was reasonably productive porpoise wise with several seen but all at distance. The prize for the early start though was a sighting and shots of the two Rissos that have been around for the past two weeks or so. Home for a quick break and cook dinner ready for the evening and it was back out for the afternoon dropping tide. Not my usual position by the lookout but a scramble down to Mackrel Point.  With my best boots on and a monopod as a steadying stick I made it without injury thankfully. My ability to clamber like a mountain goat left me many years back.

I waited as the tide race built up and anticipated the challenge at hand. Fast flowing water, darting porpoises, loppy waves and a footing that left a lot to be desired. If I thought it was difficult tracking them from 3-400mtrs when at the lookout it was doubly difficult when they are 50 or so mtrs away in two to three foot waves. The only thing in my favour was the clarity of the water which allowed me a bit of an advantage. Happy with the results I came away secretly chuffed at my efforts. I hope you agree...
