What an epic day for cetaceans. Starting on the breakwater at 08.30 and finishing on the breakwater at around 17.30 with a large dose of Strumble porpoise in between, and with over a thousand images to sort through and process I had to leave posting the blog until this morning 14th. I'm doing two blog entries to cover it all starting with the Bottlenose and then the Strumble porpoise session.
It was too early in the dropping tide for Strumble so I ventured out to the breakwater to see if there were any bottles around. Barry, my companion for the day spotted a single Bottlenose inside the outer breakwater buisily foraging and chasing fish. We spent an hour with it, until, as if someone had flicked a switch, it darted out at high speed passing within a metre or two of the rocks then out toward Cardigan Bay. We left the breakwater just after 10.am and headed to Strumble.
Just before 5.pm Lloyd messaged to say there were several Bottlenose at the breakwater so we headed out there again. The thundery showers had moved in by then but that didn't bother the dolphins. We observed an estimated 10-12 at that time with a couple of mother/calf pairings plus several juveniles well separated from the others. We were joined by Cliff and Fran, plus Nadia with some of the interns. With over 500 images from this and the morning session and with a large shower moving in I decided to leave them to it and return home to face the expanded task of processing all these plus the 500+ porpoise images from Strumble.
