Clive Hurford
to me
At least four Common Dolphins and 25+ Harbour Porpoises at Strumble Head between 09:00 and 10:00 this morning: these are almost certainly conservative estimates, as Harbour Porpoises could be seen pretty much in every section of the sea that you checked with the scope.
Hi Clive,
yep I think we birders always err on the conservative side and would not be surprised if 50+ was a closer figure inasmuch for every one on the surface there is likely to be another one at least below the surface. I have in calm conditions counted 100 + porpoises in the winter months on slow scan count which even then is probably an underestimate! Either way its more porpoises than anyone is ever likely to count elsewhere on a regular basis and your report as an experienced observer of proven ability is valuable for that alone. And then what I think is probably the first November Strumble record for Common Dolphins!
Nice one Clive!
