Lambs in the fields. House Martins and Sand Martins in the air. Birdsong ringing in my ears and parking charges resumed. Yet it doesn't quite feel like spring is really here. UNTIL TODAY!!! That is.
There is no sight quite like it in cetacean terms for me. To see all those Bottlenose rounding the island is awesome indeed. You can almost sense their relief at being almost home. From whence they came and how long/far they've travelled we can only guess. The main group of some thirty animals, mostly adults with some juveniles came first bringing a very large smile to my face and keeping my shutter finger very busy indeed. I was still very much on a high and wanted to tell the whole world (well those back at the Ocean Lab anyway) when around the island came the second group of four adults and 3-4 younger calves, some still with their foetal folds evident. Needless to say the porpoise that were there had moved off in the presence of so many dolphins and for a long while after the bottles had passed were not to be seen but did eventually re-appear but were staying well out beyond the tide race. Time to start monitoring the bay for activity so let's hope we have a great summer with these wonderful and intelligent creatures.
