Cartlet Lady Pelagic 06/09/2021 Ken's View

As I left my house the fog was hanging over Fishguard Bay with a distinct chill in the air. Fingers crossed it would be better outside Milford Haven. On arrival at the marina it was warming up nicely and we enjoyed a cuppa as we waited to board the boat. Off we went and as we left the haven we could see a bank of fog some distance out. When we reached it it was lifting and the visibility was improving, however it was blocking the sunlight and making things flat, grey and very monotone. This was how it stayed for the remainder of the morning as we ploughed our way out west.

Dolphin sightings were sporadic and those we did encounter really didn't show any interest in us and some even actively avoided us. Thankfully after lunch the skies opened out a bit and the light was more friendly towards the cameras. As we turned and headed SE we steamed for an hour or more and didn't see a single fin. It was like we were on this vast open ocean of nothingness. Eventually we hit the dolphin belt again and this time the dolphins we encountered were more lively and eagerly came to the boat to have a nosey at us and play on the bow. With very little wind even the birds were quiet with young Sheerwaters unable to take off due to that lack of wind.  Plenty of Gannets around though and one great Skua sighted briefly.

All on board enjoyed the day though especially Holly as she delighted in watching the dolphins on the bow. The images from this trip are a mixed bag due to the lack of dolphin shots in the very poor light and include the Angle Lifeboat returning from a search for a missing swimmer in which we also participated in on our way back to the Haven.
