Mathry has been shrouded in low cloud over Christmas but i was told that the sun was shining in Fishguard this afternoon! It seemed worth the risk of heading for Strumble this afternoon as a brief glance yesterday showed a couple of porps in the tiderace. Also we had news of a large pod of Common Dolphins seen between Pan Anglas and Carreg Wasted, reported by Chris Pierpoint at about 11 am With the tide topping at 16.00 and pretty calm conditions i rang good friend and Sea Trust accountant Stephen Davies to see if he fancied joining me for an afternoon Strumbling session.
We got there at around 14.30 and although it was a pretty murky, we spotted several porpoises in the gentle neepy tide race, Several Gannets were wheeling above them occasionally diving in after prey.so presumbly the porpoises were also feeding. There were probably a dozen or so, they continued to forage in and around the area we have named the "sweet spot" about 300-400metres out in front of the lookout. As the tide topped what light there was, began to fade and we had a last scan around, before leaving,
Steve was the one who suddenly noticed the commons charging in towards us from the north-west! They put up qiute a show as they ploughed on past us with several and one in particular breaching. It was probably the same group Chris had reported. They moved on past us and out of sight back in ther Direction of Fishguard, a nice ending to what had been an amusing yuletide outing!
