Another early 07.25am start today. All quiet at first and then some thirty minutes later I was transported back 5 years. Let me explain. Back then it was common to see large numbers of porpoise coming in to feed but over the years it's been much less so. Whilst the stats may show that numbers overall are holding up we don't tend to see large groups any more. Well, today what I thought was a pod of commons coming in from the NW (going by the numbers) turned out to be a pod of around twenty porpoise very excitedly and speedily rushing through the tide race with Gannets going nuts trying to keep up with them. Not the usual dart here and there with calmer surfacing between. No, these were in full out hunting mode hardly breaking surface for breath. It made for a very challenging photo session as you can imagine.
They seemed to be everywhere but mainly moving toward the point. Looking to the West more splashes, but this time a pod of Commons which were also seemingly on a mission and ploughed right through the feeding porpoise scattering them and forcing them to move off. The commons stayed around actively feeding for twenty minutes or so before dropping back with the tide to beyond the lighthouse. Thankfully a few porpoise did move back in but were more twitchy and stealthy than normal, due I'd guess to the experience they'd just had with the commons. I finished the session at 09.45 and wasn't sure what I had in the camera as it'd been so hectic. Anyway here's some of the shots I did get.
