Porpoise Commons & Bottlenose 08-09-2025

Sunday7th September

Firstly the result of a more than overdue walk to Pen Anglas. First time I'd been out there for nearly two years or so. The result was two porpoise seen with images of one showing it was a marked animal which I'm sure is in the catalogue.

Monday 8th September

A day of sunshine and showers forecast but it was overcast most of the time with some very heavy showers and thunder at Strumble during the session. Joined by the Monday survey team and several visitors the session was a busy one with 80-100 Commons feeding in the inner tide race to the NW of the lookout. As the feed went on the activity increased and they were breaching all over the place. It was a job to keep up at times as there were so many darting here and there chasing fish. It was thrilling to see them under the swells at high speed darting and seemingly turning at impossible angles as the fish led them a merry dance. They are voracious hunters and nothing much escapes when they're in attack mode. Only one porpoise, seen by Harry, but I'm not surprised given the level of dolphin activity in the tide race.

The dolphin at the rear of this group(Small fin) was sighted in a pod off the SW coast of Pembs on our first boat trip on the 18th July this year. Nice to record it twice in different locations.

Once back home a message from Holly on the group chat of Bottlenose active off the breakwater sent me off out again. By the time I got there they had quietened down and were just milling around, but nice to see they're still about but no doubt we'll soon lose them to the wider ocean as Autumn approaches.
