Rissos Stole the Show

I wasn't expecting to be able to get a session in yesterday 1/11 but some time became available so off I went. A good start on the flood tide brought three porps close in one of which was marked and we have seen many times before so a good one for the Fin ID project. A bit of a gap and then a slow trickle of porps coming in to feed. Cliff arrived mid session and as we scanned around for porps I spotted some Rissos coming in from the west. In my eagreness to get the lens on them and through the narrow view I hadn't realised how many there were. Cliff was almost in raptures as the count went up to at least 18 animals, certainly the largest single gathering I have seen out there. It didn't stop there though, that group moved on and shortly after another group of 7-8 came from the same direction and shortly after them another 3-4 approached. As the excitement died down it was back to porp spotting with quite a few moving around although now more distant. We both left with large smiles and the memory of a fantastic session for Rissos.

I decided on returning to Goodwick to visit the top of Harbour Village to take a view over the bay and see if there were any Porps feeding off  Crincoed Point or the breakwater. There were at least six off the point with gulls and gannets in attendance. Then to my surprise out in the middle of the bay at about three miles and only visible due to the very calm conditions were a further group of around 10 Rissos and I even managed to catch one of them breaching a couple of times. What a day and what a special place we live in. It's such a privilege to be able to see and record these wonderful animals right on our doorstep and to post them here for all to see.
