The Ramsey Report 30/04/2018

As many of you will be aware we are trying to expand the Porpoise ID Project and part of this involves the use of Ramsey Sound off St Davids as a second survey location. Well today, Holly, Lloyd and myself paid our fist visit to the old copper mine to scout the area and carry out the first survey. Thanks to the generousity of the owners of Treginnis Farm providing us with parking it was just a ten minute walk to the location. Soon after we arrived we sighted our first few animals as they made the ebb tide migration through the sound in the ever increasing tide flow. A much faster flow than Strumble meant we had to be on our toes as they were really moving through very quickly. We spent an hour or so there before moving along the coast to a headland overlooking St Brides Bay and the southerly streaming tide race. Another hour or so here during which we observed many porpoise feeding up the tide until they were nearly level with us before falling back and repeating the manouvre several times.
They pass the old copper mine at a much closer distance than at Strumble so when we were able to track them the images show much more detail. With a mother and very small calf and a few marked animals one of which I'm sure we saw at Strumble two days ago plus a possible mating attempt made the trip well worth it and I'm sure we'll be going back soon weather permitting. Enjoy the images.
