Strumble Diary 23/07/2019

A beautiful day at Strumble today and when I arrived the tide race was well formed but due to the neap tides was quite weak. no porpoises in sight so I set to scanning around for any action. I was joined by Rob of the Tuesday team and shortly after that Holy with volunteer Mo and interns Cloe and Rachel turned up. Over the next hour or so just a few porpoise sighted but well out and not actively feeding. At the start of the second hour I spotted a pod of around twenty or so Common Dolphin way out to the NW. We watched these for a while until they moved out to deeper water and out of sight. Holy spotted some more porpoise due north of the lookout and things went quiet again. I spotted three off to the East looked like two adults and a calf and were headed toward Pen Anglas.
We decided to try the north breakwater on the way back and had been there several minutes when Rachel spotted porpoise moving in from the Pen Anglas direction. Two adults and a calf. Sound familiar? Probably the trio I had spotted east of Strumble. A marked fin showed it was possibly one of our catalogued animals Jupiter. Great to see her with a calf again and the other porpoise also bears marks but Holy will have to verify if it's in the catalogue. The group shot from left to right is Intern Cloe, volunteer Mo, Holly centre and intern Rachel on the right.
