Having spent the last couple of hours of the rising tide at Strumble this morning (see previous entry) Fran and I had another bite of the cherry (15.00 17.00) on the falling tide.
It was pretty overcast a bit of a SW breeze had struck up and viewing conditions were not great. to make matters worse the small tide race was largely denoted by small black waves.
It was about 30 minutes into the watch, when I noticed that Gannets were gathering along the tide race at about 2 o' clock., over half a mile out, They were well spread but obviously interested in something.
When one dived in, i saw a porpoise surface close by, almost indistinguishable within the small dark waves of the weak tide race. We were then able to distinguish splashes made by feeding porpoises and occasional glimpses of the animals. The feeding gannets and porpoises were spread over several hundred metres of the tide race which was heading out at 90% from the lookout taking them further away.
All in all a rather frustrating session, but at least they were there, probably a minimum of 20 individuals.
