Strumble Diary 08/10/2021

First day out this month and more favourable now the winds have dropped and swung around from northerly to southerly. I started off at the lookout and after an hour and a half had seen one porpoise but distant. I then noticed some down off the point so decided to re-locate despite there being a very big tide which I thought may keep them further back in the tide race. Of course when I got there they had moved off but time was not an issue so I stayed around. I used a different position to normal as there was a resting grey seal down on the rocks and my normal position was a bit too close. With a 600mm lens you don't need to get too close anyway. I settled in to watch for porpoises and had three come along from the east with the tide, being very stealthy and just passing through so no pics of them sadly. I then spotted a group of what I thought were commopn dolphin out to the NE, again rushing through with the tide. As I got the lens on them it was clear that they were a group of some 6-8 Porpoise and I rattled off a few shots before they too were gone. Things went quiet then so I turned my attention to the seal.

Now when you're a grey seal and the tide is dropping all you want to do is haul yourself out and have a nice quiet siesta dreaming of all those lovely females and some nice tasty fish. Today for this chap though it wasn't going to plan.

After a blissful hour something was stirring.

Despite the dropping tide the swells were increasing

                                                               Ok so I'm awake now.

One doesn't want to get ones flippers wet.

Hey you! Yes you with the camera. Stop staring!

This happened a few times and then the final straw came in the form of a rogue swell (see video clip) after which he decided to call it a day and return to the water.

And now some calmer action of the passing porpoise.
