Strumble Diary 12/01/2022

 Three Of A Kind

A stunning day of glorious sunshine sent me scurrying off to Strumble this morning. A light SE wind gave a calm sea and the viz was excellent. Straight off the bat I spotted a pod of around twenty or so commons off to the NW at about two miles feeding under some twenty or so Gannets and many other gulles etc. Things closer in were very quiet though and with very little movement in the water due to small tides I knew it would be later that I would see porpoise if at all.

About an hour later I spotted a large group of Rissos (15 or so) moving in from the West and heading into Fishguard bay. Cliff joined me at this stage and we both watched as they glided past about 3/4 mile or so out. A pity they weren't closer but we can't have it all. As I expected it was later in the tide that we spotted a few porpoise well up the tide to the NE, too far for any images but very satisfying to have had three types of cetacean in the same session especially at this time of year when we normally see commons on rare occasions.
