Strumble Diary 03/04/2022

A bright but chilly morning at Strumble today. Big tides so I was out early to catch any action at the start of the ebb flow. A quiet stroll saw me reach the headland over the point in ten minutes or so from the car park. The sea was relatively calm with excellent viz in all directions. The remnants of the flood tide race were still evident but soon gave way to the westerly flow. Early on I spotted a lone porpoise well out to the north and that was it for the best part of two hours. Scanning around I spotted a group of three Common Dolphin moving in towards me from the NE, but as they approaced they turned and headed in toward Fishguard Bay. I got a few shots away but had a hunch I'd see them later as the dropping tide picked up. Ten minutes or so later I spotted another small group (4) well out to the north moving along with the tide but the sighting was very brief. Sure enough my hunch proved correct as the earlier group now closer in made their way west past my position before turning for the NW and heading away at pace. Another brief one breath sighting of a single porpoise some two hundred metres out brought this session to a close and I made my way back to the car and home for a welcome cuppa.
