Friend and ex Sea Trust colleague, Hanna Harries and her dad were out on his boat when they bumped into a pod of Commons. They certainly are common these days. Thanks Hannah!
Hi Cliff,
Some sightings from a day on the boat yesterday. Pics taken from videos so not the best quality!
6.30AM : Pen Morfa (~2 miles offshore) - 5-10 porpoise, small pod of distant travelling bottlenose dolphins
7.15AM: Ceibwr (~2 miles offshore) - 15-20 common dolphins, travelling quickly, bow riding, some calves
11.45AM: Pen Anglas - 2 pairs of mother and calf common dolphin, 1 porpoise
12PM : Pen Anglas (~1/4 mile offshore) - pod of 20+ common dolphins, heading into Fishguard Bay, bow riding, including very inquisitive young calf
(You'll have to sack me because I stopped noting anything down at this point as we were seeing so many pods of common dolphins and porpoises everywhere as we travelled from Pen Anglas to Strumble!)
5PM - Dinas Head - 3 adult bottlenose dolphins, bow riding
Birds: Thousands of shearwaters and auks rafting offshore, kestrel at Strumble, and one being mobbed by two crows further up the coast. Possible Bonxie - but not confident enough on my ID to say for sure!
Interestingly, in over 20 years of travelling this section of the coast, this is the first time we've ever seen commons from the boat!!!
No luck on the whales, but hopefully out again over the weekend and keeping my eyes peeled and fingers crossed.
See you soon
