Hi there folks. Good to be back after what has seemed a long long time without my almost daily Porpoise/Dolphin fix at strumble. Family matters naturally take priority and it's been my utter pleasure to care for my ailing mum over the past few months until she passed peacefully early in December. So with Sea Trust celebrating twenty years of existence this year the New Year's Porpoise Picnic has hopefully kicked off what will be a bumper year for cetacean spotting in North Pembrokeshire and especially at Strumble Hd.
The weather always plays it's part and true to form we had to cancel yesterday in favour of better weather today. The cetaceans didn't let us down either. Shortly before the main gathering arrived we had some 100 or so Commons pass west to east feeding as they went. They moved quickly through and thankfully as our watch got undwerway and as more and more people turned up several more smaller pods passed through with the tide giving a good show for all to see. A few porpoise entered the scene later in the tide with several brief but welcome sightings as the light stared to fade. Sadly I failed to get any porpoise shots but at least they were there.
It was lovely to see so many people turn out with lots of old friends present as well as many new faces too. All got to see our wonderful local marine wildlife which included seals, propoise, common dolphin and a bit of birdlife also with a Perigrine Falcon, several divers and assorted gulls, guillimots and razorbills.
All in all a great start to the year, let's hope it continues.
