Strumble diary 24 Dec 23

Fran and self spent half an hour at a very blustery Strumble in the afternoon, but apart from a few auks flying west with one or two Gannets and Kittiwakes we were obviously in the wrong place...

Emma had an amazing treat yesterday morning at pen anglas. Porpoise and gannets everywhere, lots of excitement, splashing and feeding.
Think at least over 25.

Sunday 17th December Strumble Diary report from Andy Wise

Sea Trust volunteer Andy Wise was at Strumble from 11.15 to  13.00 blustery SW wind overcast.

Despite the less thean ideal conditions he reported having seen at least 150 Common Dolphins and around 20 porpoise, High tide was at 10.30.

Strumble Diary 15/12/2023

Everything fell into place nicely today. Weather was good, tide was right and the light for a change was excellent. All I needed was the porpoise to play ball and I'd be a happy man.

I arrived two hours into the dropping tide and set up my gear. As I scanned around I spotted a pod of Common Dolphin a mile or so out to the NE. They were feeding well with thirty or so Gannets in attendance. Thirty minutes or so later they were on the move heading West just as two of our interns arrived for their Friday survey. We tracked them as they passed by, turned, then headed SW. The tide race was forming nicely and porpoise started to move up the tide race toward Mackrel Point. Two at first then others until there were five foraging off the point. They slipped back with the tide after a while and gave some good photo ops in front of the lookout. Hard to say how many porps throughout the session but a good guess would be 8-10.

                                                           30+ commons passing Strumble

Appologies for first 15 or so seconds of video. Looks like the upload to YT didn't do it any favours.

Strumble Diary 01/12/2023

A bright sunny but still very cold start to December at Strumble today. Gone was the strong NE wind of yesterday replaced with a weaker but still cold Easterly at about 3-5Mph. As soon as I had set up I could see 12-15 Commons quite distant feeding with Gannets showing their position. None came as close as yesterday but nice to know they're still around. As the ebb tide got going several porpoise showed up over the next two hours or so with most not showing too well but some others gave me the opportunity for some good shots. I stayed until they started dropping back with the tide then gave into the cold and made my way home to a warm drink and a thaw out.
