Strumble Diary 03/02/2025

Coming down off the very big tides of late I was hopeful of seeing some porpoise returning to feed in front of the lookout. I was there for the dropping tide at around 12.30pm. First to show were three which were close to the point. Their behaviour was unusual as they seemed to be circling one of the buoys. The reason became obvious soon enough though as one was a male that had obvious designs on a female. She had a smaller perhaps juvenile with her but this didn't deter the male. Several mating attempts followed with the male driving them all further out in the process. There were further sightings of mating attempts through my session but I couldn't tell if they were all the same animals or not.

No dolphin sightings for me today but I was told by Harry (volunteer) that there had been at least a hundred there earlier in the morning. However! Just before I was leaving there were many hundreds of Gannets (honestly) off to the NE about 2 1/2 miles, but in the choppy swells I could only make out the odd dolphin but there must have been a good number there to attract that many Gannets.

Also one marked animal today.
