Today I joined the Wednesday survey group at a sunny but blustery Strumble Head. Nadia, Andy, Jack, Eva and Steve were joined by two young work experience volunteers from the Brighton area. Eagle eyed Steve was the first to spot porpoise out to the North in the surging tide race. As the tide picked up so did the swells meaning the sightings were mixed with some dash and splash, some surfing and some below the surface action as well in the clear water. For an hour or so mid to late session the sightings were frequent with some showing well and others not so. When the swells are big it really is my fave time for images as the porpoise surge out of them like pro surfers, minus the boards of course. Always gives me a thrill and brings a smile. I closed my session just after 12.30 and hoped to see some Bottlenose at the breakwater on my way home. Sadly there were none there but I had seen one from Harbour Village, off the breakwater, before leaving for Strumble earlier.
Wind: SW4-5. Sea State: Generally 2-3 but 4+ in tide race. Sky: Generally clear.
