We arrived at Strumble at 11 am on Monday 25th (Bank Holiday) for a porpoise ID survey. It seems we were too late to see the Risso's that had been there are couple of hours earlier! Apparently two pods totalling low double figures seen by early birders! For the next two hours we saw nothing except a couple of very distant porpoises beyond the lighthouse seen by Harry in the final 15 minutes. Very unusuall for Strumble,
Harry also had a pod of around 6-8 Bottles just off Mackerel Point in the late afternoon.Perhaps this would explain their absence around Fishguard Bay during the morning and earlier in the afternoon. With three visiting cruise ships and a steady stream of small boats heading to and fore beteen the ships and the pontoon on the quay wall, transfereing cruise ship passingers ashore this may explain their absence in the bay.
A fresh report of 4/5 Risso's in the Strumble tiderace and a hundred + Common Dolphins from another early bird, Fiona Day(0745) !
