Breakwater Bottlenose Dolphins 7/9/25
After work i took two of our New interns, Abby and Con' out on the North Breakwater, (Fishguard Harbour) in the hope of connecting with some Bottles' In stark contrast to a wet and windy early morning visit searching for grounded Manx Shearwaters, the sun was out and the wind had died down a bit.
We drove down to the end of the breakwater but apart from myriads of mainly gulls scattered around the bay in front of us, there was no sign of any Dolphins. We decided to hang around for ten minutes and our patience was rewarded when Abby let out a scream...a Fin!!! A few seconds later the fin attached to a bottlenose Dolphin, emerged about a hundred meters away, much to the excitement of our two newcomers. I was particularly pleased for Abby and Con as our Fishguard Bottles tend to dissappear towards the end of September and they might have had to wait for their return in the spring!
The single bottle came in reasonably close and seemed to be feeding, but then moved off towards Pen Anglas. so we decided to call it a day. As we drove slowly back down the breakwater following the bottle, we noticed two more distantly, also heading away towards Pen Anglas. An extra bonus and a nice finish!
