Strumble Diary 25/01/2022

The light at Strumble today may have been poor but that didn't trouble the 400+ Common Dolphin that graced us with their presence today. Not in the entire history of our surveys at Strumble (even going back to Cliff's early days) have we seen so many actively feeding in this location. Even our summer numbers don't even come close. The reasons for their presence could be many but we suspect they have been displaced from their normal winter feeding grounds in the deeper water with so many large super trawlers off our coast over the past month or so sucking up fish stocks.

A message from Lloyd who was out in his Rib alerted me as I was on my way there so the expectancy was high. When I arrived I could hardly wait to get into the action. Everywhere you looked there were fins with some rushing around while others resting between bouts of frantic hunting. This went on for the whole session with groups of various sizes moving in then out again as they seemed to take turns at feeding. All over our view there were fins, from well beyond Mackrel point to well west beyond the lighthouse. Holly and Eva arrived for the Tuesday survey as did Cliff and a few visitors and we all got our fill of the exciting vision before us. Hopeful for tommorrow too. Fingers crossed.

Me, unsure where to look next + Holly & Eva
