Common Dolphins at Strumble and off Fishguard Breakwater

A bit of a round-up of the past few days! Ken has been getting some great pic's at Strumble of both commonn Dolphins and Porpoises. Interrogation/cross examination of Kens pic yesterday of "Denty", revealed that although it showed extremely similar damage to Dentys fin, Ken's porpoise yeaterday sadly was not Denty. On the other hand it shows good rigour in our teams examination of the two animals, allied to the quality of Kens images, that allowed the two to be distinguished as similar but different animals on close inspection. The good news is we have another new Porpoise for the catalogue! Luke (a regular and reliable birder at Strumble) reported what amounts to a superpod of Commons earlier on Saturday which he estimated at between 500 and 700 using his telescope with accompanying clouds of Gannets. Nadia and Tim Burch also reported over 200 off Pen Anglas on the southern end of Fishguard Bay! It was only in Recent years that Common Dolpins were seen inshore here and only in the past ten years or so that they were here in the winter. Gannets were also few and far between in the winter months in the past. Things are certainly changeing!
