New Quay porpoises

Thursday afternoon

Down to New Quay to see what sea birds may be about. It was a bright day which had brought the Half term visitors out, but a chilly Westerly produced a 2/3 sea state. At 14.00, two porpoises appeared, about 200 metres out from the harbour wall; one was much larger and greyish, while the smaller one was quite dark. They swam slowly and I tracked them for about ten minutes before I lost sight of them. Later, at 15.30 I saw two more (presumably the same ones) and I watched these for twenty minutes before they too disappeared. I suppose that they were taking advantage of the temporary absence of the dolphins.
