Phils Porp's!

Hi Cliff

Happy birthday for yesterday!

Not as exciting as the Stena trip but possibly my best watch from Porthgain yesterday. I had an hour last night - 19.00 - 20.00 - at the Beacon whilst OH gig rowing. Excellent conditions with good vis - force 3, SW, sea state calm. Recorded 31 individual sightings in the hour, all looked of adult size and generally fairly dispersed - possibly up to 6 may be more, foraging near the top of the flood tide. Managed to lock the scope on a couple for close ups of the action which was great, with one Gannet almost taking out a porp, it's dive seemed so close! I've kept a sporadic watch from Porthgain this Winter but have spotted nothing since last Autumn until a couple of weeks ago when I had a single sighting of a solitary porp. So perhaps this is a summer only site. I did see a mother and calf here last July in a small group of 4/5, so it will be interesting to see if this occurs again this summer.

Hope all's going well at Ocean Lab - will call in when passing for a catch up.

All the best

Phil
