In all the years I sailed in and out of Cherbourg I never saw common dolphins there - and only once saw bottlenosed dolphins in the outer harbour

I am pretty sure these Common Dolphins came in the harbour accidentally. I was lucky enough to meet up with Captain Simon Pellarini this weekend and apparently they were only there for a day, so presumably found their way out. As you know they are usually in much bigger pods and possibly got separated for whatever reason.
