From Steve Williams:
Hi . Just reporting a sighting of two porpoise swimming only about 400 yards out at sea in the bay at Wisemans bridge Pembrokeshire on Aug 13th they where travelling up the bay across the shoreline up towards Amroth. I was kayaking and fishing. had a clear view of the two porpoise .
Thanks for this Steve!
Another session on the green Breakwater was a bit frustrating to begin with. I had spotted some disturbance and whet looked like fins (possibly common dolphins I thought), beneath a Gannet as Holly and the Tuesday volunteers arrived along with Ken.
They were mega distant and just seemed to disappear. We all scanned the sea searching hard but with little reward until twenty minutes later, Holly had a brief view of fins that also disappeared! The Tuesday team headed off to Strumble.
Ken and I hung on a bit longer and just as we were about to pack in Ken found them again. This time with my scope I was able to confirm my hunch that they were common Dolphins , but acting quite strangely ,very subdued, just kind of hanging about hardly showing much more than fins.It was not surprising we had not managed to keep on them as they drifted slowly easy disappearing every now and again only really surfacing to breath.
They were showing so little that i could hardly figure out how many but a guesstimate of around 8-10 seemed reasonable, at one point i spotted a very small baby dolphin in the group, I rather suspect it was this little fellow being born that was the explanation for the unusual behaviour, though we will never know for sure! After a while they seemed to pull themselves together and headed off to the West. I think Ken got a couple of shots although they must have been at least a mile away!
Just as we were about to leave again Ken spotted two porpoises coming in towards the harbour mouth. Again frustration set in as they were extremely wary and inconsistent in their short surfacings but eventually Ken got a shot of one, the other moving out of reasonable range for a shot.
Over to you Ken!
