Another Commons Day 14/08/2020

Same pod different location. How so you say, well, in the first image of the previous post there's a dolphin with a distinctive gash in the front of it's dorsal fin and the same animal can be seen in the fifth and seventh images of this post. This shows the value of photographing marked animals as we do in the Porpoise fin ID project.

It was a very hazy day as anyone of you who are local would have observed. As I approached Strumble I have to say my heart sank a little and I didn't expect to be able to see anything much at all. Vis was down to 100-200mtrs and even in that margin the haze was affecting the images. So I've done my best under the circumstances and hope you enjoy the images.

The first sighting was just shapes out in the mist but good enough to see that they were common dolphin. They quickly moved westward and out of sight. A short while later another group rounded the lighthouse and came accross in front of the lookout. These were the ones that came the closest and provided the images below. Two more groups not as distant as the first but too far for any images followed later which gave a total estimate of some sixty to seventy animals which roughly equates with the numbers seen in the bay the previous day.
