Strumble Diary 02/12/2020 Return of the Rissos

With the weather turning for most of the rest of this week and northerly winds forecast today looked likely to be the best chance of a decent session. So off I went early to catch the start of the ebb tide to find a good blow from the NW churning up the sea in front of the lookout.

As the first fingers of the ebb flow push against the remains of the flood tide it creates an area of very turbulent water quite distinctive from the areas around it and this morning while scanning over it with the binoculars I spotted a couple of very active juvenile Rissos Dolphins. They had obviously fed well during the night and seemed to have energy to spare and were treating the big swells and turbulence as if it were a child’s playground. They slowly moved eastward following the adult animals and I lost sight of them after twenty minutes or so. They were well over 3/4 mile away and so the images are heavily cropped so are not the best quality.

There were porpoise around also and I had spotted four or five before Holly and the Wednesday volunteers arrived.  They were proving very hard to pin down and despite seeing several more over the next couple of hours I'm afraid no images were captured.
