Strumble Diary 04/08/2021 (Old Sharky's Back)

Where do I start? As you've most probably noted in the past I love to rant at conditions that don't suit photography such as heat shimmer. Well today I cursed it some more for reasons that will be obvious as you view the pick of today's images. Yesterday I missed the breaching Thresher Shark and the Porpmeister deemed that I was to be sacked (laughingly) for my incompetence. Today I get my job back because having been set the challenge of catching said shark that's exactly what I did, but how lucky was I to have seen it on two consecutive days when you might never see such a sight in a lifetime.

The session was quiet for porpoise as the ebb tide was well underway when I arrived and the porps were well off to the west. Holly and Eva were already in post and pointed out two common dolphin off to the NE. Things were patchy after that with the odd porpoise moving through and after an hour or so Holly and Eva left to explore the outer breakwater. I had been there earlier and spent five minutes or so with six Bottlenose before they moved off leaving me wishing I'd got out of bed earlier.

As I was pointing out some porpoise to some visitors I spotted around twenty or so Commons moving very quickly NE-SW around a half mile out and things soon died down again. Some ten minutes later a second pod of around thirty commons entered from the right, closer this time but still moving rapidly but pleasing to the people that were there as they were within naked eye range. I spent the next 3/4 hour watching in vain but things had gone quiet as we were now in the slack period between tides.

In my peripheral vision to my right something caught my attention, a massive splash. I swung the camera around to see this beautiful bar of silver in the form of a Thresher Shark leave the water. I rattled off several shots and hoped for the best. I was on the nail but sadly having got back home the dreaded heat shimmer had taken it's toll. The images are reasonable but not brilliant but serve as a record and a memory of that moment that will stay with me for many years I hope.

Next challenge Cliff???
