Strumble Diary 23/1/22 13 00-1500

Another calm if overcast day with an almost flat sea and only a half-hearted tiderace a couple of hours after high water. Holly, Mair and two more volunteers were already there doing a photo ID survey and had seen Common Dolphins as well as plenty of porpoises.

Indeed it was something of a porp-fest with animals surfacing far and wide, three or four here, four or five there all feeding with plenty of Gannets in attendence. A few record shots, the light was poor but apologies for their poor quality.

As the  falling tide progressed to west it took most of the porpoises with it although I did two consecutive slow counts towards the end of the survey sweeping from beyond the lighthouse to beyond Mackerel Point with scores of 17 and then 18 animals covering the whole scan. On thast basis I estimate probably at that time at least 30 animals present and quite a lot more, earlier in the watch.
