Hooray!!! Spring must be here. Why? Because I saw my first Swallow fly in off the sea and over my head today and my first Wheatear of the year as well. The wind was warmer too so it was a lot more comfortable than of late.
A slow day for porpoise with only three seen before the tide picked up and I fear the lack of porpoise may have been due to thirty or so Common dolphin feeding out to the west in the tide race, which is the route the porpoise would normally take coming in to feed.
The day was saved though with eight to ten Risso's passing close in. I spotted them first off to my east looking toward Fishguard Bay. I thought at first that they must have passed by under water, as they looked to be heading into the bay. It turned out they were facing the tide flow but letting the tide push them back in my direction. The tide was strong and they were soon level with my position and were quickly swept toward the lighthouse. When last seen they were disappearing behind the large standing waves to the NW of the island.
So what I thought was turning into a poor session actually became an excellent one with three types of cetaceans seen over the three hours or so that I was there. One of the porpoise was the very heavily marked one that's been around for nearly a week now.
