A really brief visit as I suddenly had a doubt nagging in my mind of if I had turned off the gas cooker...(I had).
Anyway, before that, on arrival at the lookout at about 1 pm there were plenty of porpoises showing. Sadly, I had no camera but did several slow scans which produced a high minimum of 15 and a low minimum of nine porpoises, so probably twenty or so spread from 220 degrees to 40 degrees.
This technique gives a fair approximation of numbers and activity. Its quite easy, all you have to do is scan west to east or vice versa slowly with your binoculars, counting the porpoises as they appear in your view. If you get the speed right, its unlikely you will get much duplication but are more likely to miss animals.
Counting cetaceans is rarely accurate as most of the time they are invisible below the surface, non the less, it provides a pretty good guesstimate,
