After a meeting with Jane Davidson, (friend and ex Welsh Government Environment Minister), I went out on the green breakwater not really expecting much as it was a rising tide. The colours of the sea were superb from ultramarine to turquoise and in the lee pretty calm. I scanned around out towards Pen Anglas, where a couple of gannets were circling, but in a pretty aimless manner. I saw nothing beneath them.and switched my view out towards the end of the breakwater. To my surprise, as i scanned, i caught a fleeting glimpse of a dolphin with what looked like a very pale juvenile accompanying it!
I jumped back in the car and drove up the breakwater, as it looked like the dolphin was heading in that direction. On arrival I could not locate them. Dolphins can do that, there one minute and gone without a trace the next. It was warm and sunny so I got a folding chair out of the car, determined to wait and see if they were going to turn up. And they did, giving not bad views of mother and calf. I have a sneaking suspicion that it might be Apache again with a new calf. They then began showing off in front of me but my camera ran out of memory and so I missed a great opportunity to really get some decent ID shots.
Just as suddenly as they appeared, they disappeared! I scanned the area in vain, until a minute or two later i noticed big foaming swirls heading back out, towards Pen Anglas. They must have somehow sensed a shoal of fish several hundreds of metres away and shot off to feed on them! I called it a day and left them to it, grinning all over my face! Lets hope whoever the dolphin is she decides to hang around for the summer! Hopefully Jane will see them at a later date!
