After the past couple of years and the Covid restrictions,
we did not get out on the Green Breakwater as much as in previous years. Either
way Bottlenose dolphin sightings were few and far between. So today I was not
expecting anything much and the sight of a big back and fin breaking the water
off the far end of the breakwater was a nice surprise! The first Bottlenose of
Spring!
I drove down to a point on the breakwater adjacent to where
I thought I had seen it, but it was not showing. Having spent several minutes scanning
the sea for it. I noticed Gannets circling
some way off Coed y Bryn at the southern end of the Fishguard Bay, about half a
mile off the point.
Too far for pic’s but I was rewarded with views of at least
one distant bottle’ feeding beneath the gannets. So, with a bit of luck, they
will be visiting us through the summer and hopefully we will get some better
images (Ken!).
With this in mind, can we please appeal to local boat owners
to stick to the following guidelines.
1.
The dolphins tend to hang around the harbour
mouth. Be aware and try not to disturb them.
2.
Please do not chase dolphins, it’s against the
law and might result in them being injured or separated from babies.
3.
If dolphins come up to you then take care slow down,
and keep a steady straight course. It’s the best way to see them, on their own
terms.
Sea Trust volunteers will be monitoring, photographing and
filming them off the breakwater, When and where practical, we will also invite
people to join us there whenever we can. Our aim is to protect these vulnerable
creatures and we hope we have the support of boatowners and all our community
in this, our mission.
