I was always puzzled as to why Risso's Dolphins should appear so frequently in our inshore waters here in Pembrokeshire when they are always described as a deep water /continental shelf edge animal. A few years ago a local fisherman told me that he got squid eggs on his pot lines from late summer into the winter so this seemed to correlate with them being known to feed largely on squid.
Common squid approx' 30 cm body length, caught by Lloyd Nelmes |
So when Lloyd came into the Ocean lab with this beauty, the theory was confirmed, a common squid, Loligo vulgaris caught whilst fishing in Fishguard Bay just off the harbour. I guess the squid came first!
