Strumble Diary 31/08/2023

The forecast was for rain all morning, the overcast cloud made it more like an Autumn day and I really didn't think I was going to get out to Strumble today. Supping my morning tea I spotted just a hint of brightness peeping between the clouds off to the west through my kitchen window . A little seed of hope then to set my mind questioning the forecast.

Decision made then and off I went. I arrived just after 08.30 with the light still poor but improving and the sea being flattened by a stiff SE'ly off the land. The viz was good though so I set up and settled in wrapped up to keep out that chill wind.

First sighting was of three porpoise well out beyond the range of the camera lens. They moved off and some twenty minutes later the sight that always sets my pulse racing appeared off to my right some 300mtrs out, of course it was the fins of five Rissos dolphin. Moving slowly accross from east to west two broke away and circled around for five minutes as the others carried on and out of view. Thirty minutes later about a 3/4 mile off to the NNW I spotted another 8-10 Rissos  making their way SW at normal pace with one animal making several breaches some distance away from the main group. Always a thrill to see the Rissos breaching given their size and the fact it doesn't happen that frequently. I waited until the Thursday volunteers arrived and stayed a while, captured a few porpoise pics and then left them to it.  Hope you enjoy the images as much as I did taking them.
