Today was Dolphin Day at Strumble. A five hour watch with three of them filled with wall to wall dolphins in glorious sunshine and light winds. Cliff joined me just after midday and soon we spotted a group of commons moving SW off to the west of the lighthouse. They were followed shortly afterwards with a much larger pod of around 60 animals distant to the north. This group tracked west then turned to the SW passing quite close. A few other pods were sighted to the NE and E and by the time Cliff was leaving we had an estimated total of 150-170. Shortly after Carrie arrived and we enjoyed further sightings at all points and by the time I was leaving for home the estimate for the day had risen to 250+. As I headed to my car there were still good numbers feeding in what was now the dying swirls of the tide race. A very enjoyable session with a couple of porpoise thrown in for good measure.
