That's Strange!
In my blog entry two days ago on the 23rd I stated that one of the Bottlenose had caught a large Sea Lamprey. For all intents and purposes from the angle and distance the image was taken at that's exactly what it looked like. I have seen seals with them in the same area so a natural assumption I suppose. However, today for the first time I managed to get a close up of the same animal with it's head out of the water. I have to say I was taken aback when I uploaded the images to my computer. Not a Lamprey at all but a growth of some sort, maybe a birth disfigurement growing out from where it's right eye should be. Obviously it's thriving and seemingly not affected feeding wise by it, but we'll never know how it really is affecting it if at all. There is also the possibility that it is caused by a parasite. Somewhere in the back of my brain I remember seeing a segment on parasites that invade the eyes of some sharks. A possibility here? I wonder. Anyway, sorry if it looks a bit gruesome but that's nature for you.
