The morning session turned out to be a very quiet one indeed. From 08.15 until 12.45 I hadn't seen a single fin. Volunteer Ben then spotted a couple of porpoise out beyond the lighthouse off to the west in very heavy swells. It was the second highest tide of the year and the flow of the tide race was exceptionally strong. Maybe this deterred the porpoise from coming in to feed in the earlier part of the tide. I left shortly after this with a thought to return later for the rising tide.
I did return at 17.15pm and was greeted with 15-20 commons feeding 3-400mtrs off to the NE of the lookout. They gradually moved closer and I had an hour or so with them until the good light dropped away and they moved off to the NW.
