Strumble & the Northern Breakwater 18/05/2025

With low tide moving on through the day I decided to give the rising tide a go early in the morning. I arrived well before the tide raace was due to form in hopes of catching anything passing by. Well, the tide race came and the tide race went and not a single porpoise or anything else for that matter came in to feed. I was quite surprised considering the high numbers we've been seeing on the dropping tides over the past fortnight or so. Just before the top of the tide I decided to call it a day and move to the breakwater to see if there were any Bottlenose about.

A quick view from Harbour Village saw there were several Bottlenose indeed  feeding there. I entered the breakwater just as the ferry was rounding the entrance to the harbour, and they all took off heading out to the north. I was gutted to say the least. Mind you, if I was having my ears pounded by the noise of those engines I'd want to get away from it too. I was joined by Mae and not long after by Cliff and thankfully after the ferry departed the Bottlenose or at least some of them returned. We watched them feeding taking some very large Salmonids possibly 10lb + with the juveniles showing more social activity away from the adults. Lots of rolling and body rubbing which sparked a debate between us as to the nature of the interactions. Mae and myself were thinking along the lines of playfulness with Cliff sensing some sexual interacions were probable. Well, based on a couple of imges below I have to accept that the old walrus was right.
