Breakwater Bottles & Strumble Porpoise 08/06/2025

A bit of a split blog today as I had a breakwater visit before heading off to Strumble.

When I arrived at the breakwater there were four to six animals (hard to tell) foraging, some close in some further out. That time of the morning (08.00)  the sun is coming right across the bay so shooting is tricky to say the least. It does however lend itself to some arty type shots which can be pleasing to some.

It's always nice to see what the Dolphins and Gannets are feeding on, so I was quite pleased to catch some shots of a Gannet trying to stuff a very large Garfish down it's gullet. Naturally others wanted to get in on the action and it was firstly stolen by a Blackback Gull who in turn dropped it when harrased by two more Gannets, one of which was the eventual prize winner. At one stage it looked like a bottlenose was angling for a bit of it too.

And lastly for today, an hour or so on the dropping tide at Strumble. Very quiet at first then as the tide race picked up, so did the sightings. Again as of late they were mostly in the outer tide race and stayed there for almost the whole time with only one or two showing briefly closer in. I'd say 12-15 animals in total in some very confused water with a lot of the sightings being just fin tips and splashes. Do take a close look at the first two images in particular which show several fish, most probably Mackerel, riding over the nose of a charging Porpoise. I started my session at 08:45 and ended it just around 10:00 with the porpoise having moved West on the tide.
