Cartlet Lady Shakedown trip 19/07/2025

On our previous attempted trip out some weeks ago and having to return to port with engine troubles before leaving the Haven, skipper Andy has worked his magic and used his great mechanical skills and got our precious Lady back in fine running order, which gave us an opportunity to get out there and give her a good run out.  Glad to report all was well and she performed like a dream. We were hoping though for calmer seas than we actually got and at one stage it was borderline and we thought we may have to come back in early.

We had gone out 16 miles to the West at this stage and hadn't seen any cetaceans at all. Andy made the call to turn North and head up toward Grassholm which turned out to be the right call. As we steamed along  from Grassholm toward Skomer Island I spotted some Commons off to our Starboard side about 200mtrs out but only because they breached fully over the 2mtr swells. As we carried on up into St Brides Bay we came accross several more small groups of Commons which we were lucky to keep with us for a while allowing everyone who wanted them good views off the bow. Time then to make the turn and start to head in.

We had a wide track around skomer and were alerted by Anna on Skomer that she could see us passing. We could barely make her out on a high point above North Bay and James who had borrowed my big lens for the trip was amazed to get a shot of her at 1 1/2 miles. I think I know what James's next Christmas wish will be. (Sorry Nadia)  Through Jack sound then and a dash along the coast, round St Annes HD and back into the Haven. We returned to the marina around 17.30 all safe but tired (except for Lloyd who seems to have unlimited energy) so a big thank you to skipper Andy and crew Rob for their time and expertise and another memorable day on the Cartlet Lady.

Is that a Porpoise? You'd be forgiven if like me you thought it was.

It really was a Common Dolphin.

After these we move north to Grassholm.

Then it was off to Skomer with more Commons en route.

Finally our weary crew ready for home.
