Strumble Diary 29/09/2025

With the Monday survey team heading of to Pen Anglas Cliff thought it would be a good idea for us two to do a simultaneous watch at Strumble to compare sightings over the same period and tidal conditions. The tides at present are small with not a lot of flow and a very weak tide race. I arrived before Cliff and had seen a few porpoise way out in the distance due to the calm conditions. After he arrived we spotted several small groups of Common Dolphin scattered all around from beyond the lighthouse to the N'West to the East in the direction of Pen Anglas although these turned back and we don't think they got as far as that. Through the two hour session it was the dolphins that dominated but in the last fifteen minutes or so I spotted a group of 4-5 Porpoise moving East to West at a fair distance out.

Postscript from Cliff:
Fran with the other volunteers on Pen Anglas  did briefly see some Commons c12-15, probaly the ones that spent most of the session with us, but no porpoises. At Strumble this morning we also had the company of a couple of learnre birdwatching ladies from Hereford. We were able to show them the cetaceans as well as different sea birds including Common Scoter and Shag, helping them to increase their tick list at the start of their visit!
Yesterday afternoon Fran and myself watched Common Dolphins for a couple of hours, and also Porpoises. At one point they seemed to be feeding in front of us. They kept a little distance apart  but seemed ok in reasonably close contact.
Later. Sea Trust's AnnaWebberly was at Strumble with her mum and very briefly saw a whale blow and tail slap but was unable to identify it from the fleeting view they had!
