Strumble Diary 19/10/2023 Part 2 (the cetaceans)

Firstly can I draw your attention to the previous post re the installation of the new interpretation panels at the lookout.

As most of you will have noticed the weather today was very hit and miss with it deteriorating as we went into the afternoon. With very dark skies and bands of thick drizzle moving through it was tough day on the cameras. The survey team were well into their stint when I arrived and were starting to spot porpoise moving through as the tide started to ebb. A group of five or so and they stuck around for a good while having a good forage some 200Mtrs out.

The survey team returned to the Ocean Lab and I settled in for my own session. Dan spotted some Rissos off to the NW and we watched them as the next bank of drizzel enveloped them and obscured them from sight. It did lift slightly and we managed a few distant shots as they moved northward and away from us. It was then the turn of the Common Dolphins which moved in from the west at great speed with several juveniles breaching as they went. I'm sure I saw them smiling as they playfully played leapfrog with each other. Sadly the dreaded drizzle spoiled the party with only the closest of some fourty or so animals being close enough for my lens to pierce the gloom. Several porpoise also joined the party now that the tide race was running. So all in all despite the weather and the shrill noise or the drills behind us it was quite a memorable day.
