The weather was dire this morning and as it started to break a little I decided to try the rising tide in the afternoon. I met Fran and the Monday volunteers as we passed in the narrow lane just short of Strumble. They had seen porpoise at the bottom of the tide so that gave me hope. The weather closed in again shortly after I arrived and conditions for photography were much less than perfect.
As the tide race began to form some porpoise did indeed come in to feed but were mostly distant and difficult to capture even with the extra reach of the new lens. I did manage some shots though and was pleased to see when I returned home that there were three marked animals, one possible returner and two new to me so hopefully new to the ID catalogue too.
With the clocks going back we've reached that point in the year when the afternoons become darker a lot sooner which by December will mean only about 5 hours in the day where there is decent light for photography. This means that having the luxury of choosing what time of the tide to get out there gets less and less as the days go by. We still get out there though and do our best to keep the ID project going. The good news is that by January they start stretching out again and then it's only the cold/wet and sometimes freezing weather that impedes us. Several layers and the look of the Michelin Man though keeps the elements at bay, because as they say "The show(surveys) must go on"
