Strumble Diary 26/02/2025

Now to a more normal blog post. Todays survey 08.45-11.30. A stiff WNW wind against the tide and with more sunshine than cloud made for near perfect conditions for me with some rolling swells in the tide race. Porpoise sightings were fleeting and distant with only a few seen in the first hour or so. The dolphins were very active though and were my main sightings for a good part of the session. Many were feeding well offshore and a pod of twenty or so (including the animal in the previous post) came travelling through closer earlier around 9am. As the dolphins moved off things got quiet with just several more stealthy porpoise sightings in the tide race up until the survey team arrived around 11am. I left shortly afterwards.

 Some Gannet portraits for you.

Bird flu had a great impact on the Gannets of Grassholm but thankfully some survived it. These birds though didn't come away unscathed. If you look at the eye of the bird above which is how it should be and compare it with the two below you will notice a definite difference. There is a loss of pigmentation in the eye but thankfully it doesn't seem to affect their hunting for fish.
